One whole day of Court time wasted.
Warwick sitting at Leamington Spa
9/7/13
Defendant in robbery trial not produced from custody. Then no Punjabi interpreter for witness. Capita claim on telephone to CPS that no booking has been made. This is clearly not correct, because they later send an e-mail giving the exact details of the booking as the subject heading! They say they only have 2 Punjabi interpreters, one of whom is busy and the other cannot be found (!). It is suggested that the interpreter cannot attend before 12 noon the following day because he/she is based 100 miles away. Options offered are that the interpreter could be available at “around 12″ the following day or else a possibility that another could be found who might be available for 10.15 am.
Identity of defendant withheld – case not concluded.

R v Peace Freedom, listed for trial at St Albans Crown Court on 10th July 2013.
The trial was stood out for three and a half months, until late October.
The delay was for two reasons: (a) Witness Services had not made reasonable efforts to secure the attendance of prosecution witnesses. (b) The Court had only booked the defendant’s interpreter for a one-hour time slot, for a two-day trial. ROW 923 Twitter: Capita still struggling to get interpreting service right Intro:

You should know that the Criminal Justice System is reaching its tipping point. Complete chaos is already here. Collapse is not far away.... Let me tell you what's been going on at my court today.....you couldn't make it up. First of all a Youth sex offence TRIAL has not been able to proceed as no interpreter present. Witnesses & lawyers sent on their way! The Council turn up to prosecute some cases. They are sent back to their office as no court space! Now on their way back...!!?!?! One of my cases has been moved courtrooms FOUR times!! And is now back where it started with an estimated time to start....afternoon. No paper files available for cases before the District Judge who has sent cases away. WE DON'T GET EVIDENCE ANYMORE! Another of my clients. In custody 2 weeks hasn't been brought to court. AT ALL. NOWHERE TO BE SEEN..!! On court list. Not on cells list. It is only the goodwill and infinitely limitless tolerance of the lawyers that's preventing complete collapse.

Update on y'days interpreter farce - client not produced from prison today - back again tomorrow. 2 days on remand due to cutbacks.
The main reason I am so unhappy about interp issue this week is that, pre-Capita, we had superb Polish interns round here, who were local but since the new contract, they have not signed up as they value their professionalism and are no longer available. Courts struggle to get cover now. Huge Polish population in Swindon. It is a deplorable situation. #whatpricejustice
